Our Hands Are Valuable: Discover Traditional Occupations

Project
Traditional occupations form the foundation of Turkey's cultural heritage and economic strength. Carpentry, barbering, auto mechanics, tailoring, shoemaking, and similar crafts are symbols of wisdom and mastery passed down through generations. However, today, due to the overemphasis on university education, young people's interest in these valuable professions has decreased, and the master-apprentice system has weakened.
As the Mahir Youth and Development Association, we launched the Master-Apprentice Meetings Project to change this situation. Our aim is to bring high school students together with real professionals, show them the value of traditional occupations, and offer alternative career options to young people.
We believe that the development of a country requires not only university graduates but also talented, experienced, and passionate masters. This project aims to enable young people to make conscious career choices, secure the future of handicrafts, and create a healthier employment structure in society.
Core Interventions of the Program
๐จโ๐ Master Profile and Selection In cooperation with the Chamber of Artisans, we identified 20-30 experienced masters in various fields. Each master has at least 10+ years of experience in their field. Carpenters, barbers, auto mechanics, tailors, shoemakers, electricians, glassmakers, blacksmiths, and other craftsmen are at the heart of our project. Each master volunteers to introduce their occupation, provide practical knowledge, and inspire young people.
๐ฏ Matching with High School Students We identified volunteer students from 10-15 high schools. Each student is matched with a master in a professional field of interest. This matching is done dynamically, taking into account the student's area of interest and career curiosity. We aim to involve a total of 100-150 high school students in this program.
๐ช Monthly Master Meetings Events Once or twice a month, we organize events that bring together masters from different professions. At these events, 3-5 masters perform live demonstrations showing their workspace. Students:
Listen to masters describing their professions
Observe live work setups
Try out hands-on experiences themselves
Can ask one-on-one questions
Establish direct connections with masters
Each event hosts 50-100+ participants. Events are organized on weekends, outside of school hours.
๐ค Master-Apprentice Internship Program Interested students get the opportunity to work in the field for 1-3 months alongside their chosen master. During this period:
They gain practical experience in a real working environment
They receive one-on-one mentor guidance from the master
They learn to perform tasks independently
They gain real competence in the profession
An opportunity to find potential apprentices opens up for the master
The association assumes all insurance and legal liabilities. Students who successfully complete the program receive a certificate and a letter of recommendation from the master.
๐ Informative Seminars in High Schools We organize informational seminars for guidance counselors and students in 10-15 high schools. Seminar topics include:
The master-apprentice system and vocational development paths
The current state and future of traditional occupations
Successful stories of masters and apprentices
Non-university career options
Financial independence and entrepreneurship
Speakers include association founders, successful masters, young entrepreneurs, and industry experts.
๐ฌ Master Stories Documentary Series We prepare 3-5 minute video portraits for each master. In these videos:
The master's personal story and relationship with the profession are told
Real working footage in the workplace is included
The challenges and rewarding aspects of the profession are shared
Their advice to youth is featured
Stories of success and failure are detailed
๐ Strategic Partnership with the Chamber of Artisans We benefit from the Chamber of Artisans' network of masters. In return:
We provide its members (masters) with opportunities to find new apprentices
We boost prestige by promoting traditional occupations on social media
It increases youth interest in these professions
We prepare professional video portraits about Chamber members
The Chamber's visibility increases through media outreach
How Do We Ensure Quality and Impact?
Quality Master Selection Each master is evaluated for teaching capacity, personal qualities, and communication skills with young people. Master mentoring and training are provided.
Participant Evaluation A satisfaction survey is administered to students after seminars. Self-evaluation is conducted for those who complete internships. Success is measured and documented.
Mentor Support Regular communication is maintained between each master and the association coordinator. In case of any disagreement between the student and the master, the association mediates.
Certification System Students who complete the internship are given a certificate by the Chamber of Artisans. This certificate is evaluated as an official document and provides an advantage during employment.
Success Tracking Following the project, tracking is done on how many students actually chose the profession and how many masters found apprentices. Whether long-term relationships are established is observed.
Reaching and Engaging with Youth
University and High School Partnership We directly communicate with vocational education departments of universities and high school guidance counselors. We make announcements for seminars and events.
Social Media Campaign Master stories and event announcements are shared via Instagram, YouTube, TikTok, and Blog. Hashtags: #LearningFromMaster #OurHandsAreValuable #TraditionalProfessions #WayToProfession
Influencer Collaboration By collaborating with social media influencers in the field of education, we bring the project to broader audiences.
Event Promotion Prior to each event, intensive promotion is carried out on social media. Post-event photos and videos are immediate shared to maintain momentum.
Accessibility The project is completely free! The association has made all events and internship programs open to youth. No student is excluded due to financial reasons.
Building a Sustainable Craft and Apprenticeship Ecosystem
In the long term, the Master-Apprentice Meetings Project aims to establish:
Master Directory: Masters and craftsmen in various cities of Turkey are listed on a digital platform
Apprenticeship Certificates: A formalized apprentice certification system is established
Job Exchange: Master and apprentice demands are matched, and cooperation is established
Expansion: It expands to 5-10 cities in Turkey within 2-3 years
Academic Research: Research on the future of traditional occupations is conducted
National Competitions: Handicrafts olympiads and mastership contests are organized
In this way, while protecting traditional craft professions, we diversify youth employment and aim to build a "master culture" in Turkey.
